Persistence of elegance in the age of images — analysis of Ji Yutang’s new work Hong Kong Magnificence

Original

Sindre Sindre 2019-05-01 21:13

The starting point - the glory and tribute of the Zheng family

Everyone knows that Ji Yutang has the tradition of one city and one work.

He once explained: Since I come to a city, I have to interact with the city and build relationships. This city needs someone to share it with me, and in most cases, this person is my landlord. When I only get along with one person in a city, I can slowly get in touch with him, and I can even spend a whole day talking about one thing clearly, and all the time spent in this process will eventually be transformed through design relationship with the city. At the same time, my clients will be closely connected with the city through my design.

Zheng Zhiwen and her family are one of the owners of Master Ji.

Hong Kong Rosewood is also Ji Yutang's gift to the Zheng family - to celebrate their family's glorious and glorious history.

▲  Zheng Zhiwen stood on the magnificent spiral staircase in Hong Kong to receive congratulations from the stars.

The land where Hong Kong Rosewood is located has a very special significance to the Zheng family. It can be said that this land has completely witnessed the development history of the Zheng family. Cheng Chi-man's grandfather, Cheng Yu-tung, built Hong Kong's earliest complex, New World Center, here. It was the most famous complex in Hong Kong in the 1980s and influenced a generation of Hong Kong people. In 2011, the building was demolished. It was not until 2017 that New World Group announced that the land would be designed by KPF and turned into a new comprehensive development project called Victoria Dockside.

▲  Victoria Dockside, including Rosewood, ARTUS, and K11

The relationship between Master Ji and the Zheng family first originated from Rosewood in London, which opened in 2013. At that time, Miss Zheng had just taken over the Rosewood brand and needed to open up the business and prove herself with a new branch. When Master Ji took over the hotel, it was a former insurance building headquarters that had been converted into a Renaissance hotel. When Master Ji saw the original glass canopy on the exterior of the Renaissance Hotel for the first time, he collapsed on the spot and thought it was really indecent. He was determined to carry out a comprehensive restoration of the facade and public areas, restoring the building to its former glory.

▲  Rosewood London, opened in 2013

When London Magnificence was unveiled to the world in 2013 with a copper portico that cost a considerable amount of money, the people of London were impressed. Master Ji used the concept of city residence to refresh Rosewood's brand image, which was becoming outdated and unclear at the time, and opened the door for subsequent development. It can be said that Rosewood London was the starting point for Rosewood's rapid expansion in the following six years.

Approach

If Rosewood London attempts to be a quiet mansion in the city, then the core concept of Rosewood Hong Kong is a private country manor in the city.

Master Ji once discussed the magnificent approach with the Cheng family in depth. He suggested that two different exclusive yacht routes should be set up in Central and Wan Chai to welcome guests from Hong Kong Island to the hotel elegantly and quickly. In his opinion, an elegant way of arrival is an important part of the establishment of the concept of " country estate " .

▲  Rosewood Hong Kong, Approach

At present, the available approaches for actual opening are still relatively routine. If it is through pedestrians, the first floor of Victoria Dockside on the Salisbury Road side is partially elevated. Here, there is Hong Kong's magnificent pedestrian entrance, and next to it is the future pedestrian entrance of ARTUS. After entering the pedestrian entrance, we came to the ceremonial space that Master Ji is very good at. In the lobby are paintings by Argentinian artist Edurado Hoffmannart.

Of course, you can also choose a more dramatic path: continue a short distance ahead and arrive at the magnificent car entrance in Hong Kong. Here, as the building base spirals up, a porch decorated with plants will maintain the The scenery of the harbor is looming into your sight, while the gas lamps on the wall create a full sense of ritual. Master Ji uses this technique to strip away the hustle and bustle of the city and guide you into the story and experience of a country manor.

Finally, when you reach the 2nd floor platform, the entire sight suddenly opens up. In addition to the Victoria Harbor View on the other side, there is also the Three Piece Reclining Figure Draped sculpture by British sculptor Henry Moore to greet you. The creation concept of the entire sculpture is based on the static human form.

After clearing your mind, get ready to enter Hong Kong’s magnificent interiors.

Social × ceremonial public area

When Master Ji helped create the Andaz brand, he called for the possibility of a high degree of integration and full-time operation of hotels in the future. At Rosewood Hong Kong, this concept has been fully implemented and upgraded.

The entire second floor contains 2 restaurants, 1 bar, and 2 retail spaces, and also provides the hotel's essential front desk, concierge and other regular functions. Analyzing its plane, we can find that what is actually more difficult to deal with is the complex traffic movement lines, including the movement lines of vehicles and pedestrians, and the movement lines of the future K11 shopping mall. After sorting out the main circulation lines, Master Ji then designed the secondary dining circulation lines and other dining spaces accordingly. On the basis of reasonable movement lines, the entire space has been fully created and polished.

▲  Hong Kong’s magnificent 2-story floor plan

Hong Kong’s magnificent front lobby design is reminiscent of the exquisite lobby of 5th Avenue Andaz, but Andaz’s lobby is highly functional. Due to the concept of de-front desk, the bar in the center becomes the actual front desk, so you can see the busy processing Scenes of check-in, check-out and waiting for guests.

▲  Andaz 5th Avenue Lobby

The attributes of Hong Kong’s magnificent halls are purely social. The pinwheel-shaped decorative cabinet in the hall displays ship models, books, and floral arrangements. In the evening, candlesticks are lit as night falls. In Hong Kong, which is usually busy, guests can be seen waiting here from morning to night, chatting, sitting on benches and turning on computers to deal with urgent business matters. There are also children playing with the models, and of course there is no shortage of selfies taken by internet celebrities. It is a very "Hong Kong" social scene.

▲  Lobby @ Rosewood Hong Kong

The concierge and florist are set up on the left side of the lobby. The window-style florist not only adds a dreamy color to the space, but also effectively uses the hotel's space as a retail space.

▲  Concierge and florist

The most frequently checked-in and photographed space on the second floor is the art exhibition hall that houses the artwork "The Skin Speaks A Language Not Its Own" created by the Indian female artist Bharti Kerr, which was auctioned by the Zheng family for 100 million Hong Kong dollars. The core logic of this exhibition hall is actually to solve the intersection of the flow of people from the Ground Floor Lobby, the flow of people going to the Chinese restaurant on the fifth floor, and the flow of people going to the restaurant on the first floor. Displaying an eye-catching artwork in a pass-through space also allows People in a hurry can stop and feel the atmosphere and taste of the entire hotel.

" Season-style " new era hotel dining space concept

On one side of the art exhibition hall, we come to the key node that connects several dining spaces - Butterfly Patisserie. On both sides of this dreamy retail space selling exquisite chocolates, macarons and other snacks are the hotel's two main restaurants, one is a drink The Butterfly Room for afternoon tea, on the other side is the hotel's tea restaurant The Holt's Café.

▲  Butterfly Patisserie  @ Rosewood Hong Kong

▲  Butterfly Patisserie plane

In fact, the 1.0 version of this concept was implemented as early as Park Hyatt Shanghai. At that time, Pantry was used to connect the public area and the Italian restaurant The Dining Room.

▲ Park Hyatt Shanghai, Pantry serves as the front lobby of Dining Room

The 2.0 version appears in the Chengdu Qunguang Grand Hyatt. This dim sum retail space named Newka connects the lobby, buffet restaurant, Xi·Mi Bar and Charcoal Grill .

▲  New·Ca@Grand Hyatt Chengdu

Returning to the magnificent Butterfly Patisserie and flower shop in Hong Kong, the same logic applies. In the future, hotel space will become increasingly expensive and construction costs will rise, requiring more complex graphic design, functional innovation and diverse business models. .

The " new era hotel catering model " that Master Ji has always insisted on has also been developed and upgraded at Rosewood Hong Kong.

The Holt's Café is named after Taikoo Cang Pier, the original site of Rosewood Hong Kong. The statues of Gillie and Marc, tobacco-colored glass lighting, photos of Hong Kong city life, and semi-open private rooms transform Hong Kong’s daily down-to-earth teahouse culture into an elegant and lively modern experience.

▲  Chinese afternoon tea area in Holt's Café

▲  Holt's Café dining area

In this restaurant, the traditional all-day restaurant format has been completely abandoned. It no longer adopts the layout of buffet + dining area, but the format of Open Kitchen + casual dining area. The restaurant is also intentionally divided into a dining area and a Chinese tea drinking area. The Chinese tea tasting area, through the Butterfly Patisserie, echoes the Western afternoon tea The Butterfly opposite.

▲  Holt's Café floor plan

▲The Kitchen of  Holt's Café

Master Ji has talked about the history of this dining space system many times, starting from the undefined dining space of 5th Avenue as Andaz 1.0. Go to the open kitchen + dining + bar complex model in Andaz Tokyo Toranomon Hills in Andaz 2.0 . This model is constantly being upgraded.

▲ The Kitchen @ 5th Avenue Andaz

▲ Andaz Tavern @ Andaz Tokyo Toranomon Hills

Therefore, the core of Master Ji's so-called " new era hotel catering model " is actually: in the future, the traditional full-time buffet restaurant will become more and more passive and outdated. At the same time, the establishment of a full-time restaurant is too complicated: a huge kitchen, A huge front buffet and an inefficient and inflexible business model. Therefore, he encourages the Open Kitchen + specialty catering model. On the one hand, breakfast can be solved in a semi-buffet + a la carte manner, while for lunch and dinner, some kitchen functions can be front-loaded, which is both efficient and stylish. This model The catering efficiency will also be greatly improved.

As for the other two dining spaces on this floor: The Butterfly and The Darkside, because some of the soft furnishings are a bit difficult to describe, I won’t mention them here. As long as the people of Hong Kong like to see them.

" Seasonal " New Era Banquet Model

Master Ji is best at ceremonial spaces, and Hong Kong Rosewood’s goal in the banquet space is also very clear: to strive to create the banquet space with the highest standards and quality in Hong Kong, and of course, the price is also expected to be the highest

.

▲ Ballroom spiral staircase

In terms of design, Hong Kong’s magnificent banquet space is the culmination of Master Ji’s banquet spaces. A highly functional complex, especially a conference and catering complex. The banquet floor on the third floor is mainly composed of a conventional large banquet hall + front hall and small conference hall, but what is interesting on the plane is the addition of a bar + cocktail reception hall. It is hoped to realize the functional combination of bar and banquet

.

▲ 3F Floor Plan

In terms of hardware, The Bar fully meets the configuration of an independently operated bar, but it prefers to be used in the form of a private reception . Of course, not only the bar itself is reserved, but also the entire front hall Salon de Chin is reserved as a grand Social receptions, so when you are negotiating banquet rentals at Rosewood Hong Kong, it is very likely that when the salesperson is recommending the grand banquet hall to you, your colleagues will strongly promote their reception capabilities and standards: "The hardware of our hotel here is excellent. Exclusive bar + front room bla bla...you only need to pay a certain reasonable fee...and you can...

"

▲ The Bar  @  Rosewood Hong Kong

▲ Salon de Chin  @  Rosewood Hong Kong

By the way, besides The Bar, there is also a rather impressive outdoor lawn with a panoramic view of Victoria Harbor. This is also part of the story line of Hong Kong's magnificent " Country Manor "

.

▲ 3F outdoor lawn

Back to the grand ballroom itself, the biggest highlight is the use of the new technology Skyfold fully automatic screen. In addition to the more flexible separation method, the most popular usage mode is the dramatic opening method

.

▲ The Grand Ballroom Skyfold is opening..

.

▲ The complete banquet hall after the Skyfold is opened, a dramatic presentation.

In addition to the conventional large banquet modules, Hong Kong’s magnificent small conference hall modules are worth mentioning.

Here we need to review the Master Ji Conference Hall Space Model 1.0, from Andaz 5th Avenue. As early as 10 years ago, he was keenly aware of the inefficiency of the traditional small conference hall model. Most usage scenarios are nothing more than using it from morning to In the evening, as soon as the meeting ended, the meeting area was deserted and messy.

Why can't the conference hall be directly converted into a catering space and continue to be used to increase the usage time?

So he set up an Open Kitchen in the front hall space of the conference room on 5th Avenue. On the one hand, the hotel itself was limited in space and was not enough to set up a back kitchen, so it was necessary to put the back kitchen in the front. On the other hand, the front open kitchen model was more Demonstrative and ornamental. Of course, the Open Kitchen was carefully enclosed by Master Ji with glass folding doors, practicing his concept that service spaces need to be separated

.

▲ Open Kitchen in the 5th Avenue Andaz banquet space

The conference hall space model 2.0 comes from the Grand Hyatt. The Open Kitchen is placed in a more centralized location. It can be said that each small conference hall is organized around the Open Kitchen

.

▲ Plan of the small conference room area of Qunguang Junyue

▲ Qunguang Junyue Conference Room Open Kitchen Concept

At Rosewood Hong Kong, the Open Kitchen has been upgraded to a form closer to a buffet table of an all-day restaurant, integrated with the lobby of the conference hall. The operational consideration is to be able to undertake more ceremonial dinners, cocktail parties, etc

.

▲ Hong Kong Rosewood 3F conference room area plan, with The Bar on the far left

▲ 3F conference room area Breakout Hall, with open kitchen + buffet on the left

If the third floor is the 3.0 banquet model, then the fourth floor is the wedding banquet space 2.0 model. The entire 4th floor is named "Lai Mansion", which is the most stylish wedding banquet space in Hong Kong.

The 1.0 model came from Qunguang Grand Hyatt. At that time, Master Ji was keenly aware that the future growth point of high-end hotel banquet spaces would be the increasing demand for wedding banquets, so he designed a dreamy and formal space in Qunguang Grand Hyatt. The complete bridal room, whether it is the wedding dress, wedding rings, dressing room, parents' room, etc., is clearly designed and solidified into a module, trying to use excellent hardware to impress the brides who come to choose the banquet space

.

▲ Qunguang Junyue bridal room

In Rosewood Hong Kong, Master Ji continues this idea, with a complete suite model, a dreamy space, and an outdoor terrace to create a heart-warming bridal room

.

▲ Hong Kong’s magnificent bridal room floor plan

▲  Hong Kong’s magnificent luxury suite, pay attention to the two wedding ring glass display cabinets

.

▲ The Orangery, the outdoor terrace outside Hong Kong’s magnificent bridal chamber

In the 4F conference hall space, combined with the theme of wedding banquets and small banquets, Master Ji played a more complex system: this system is composed of travel conference + Recption + Wine Gallery + Breakout Hall + Open Kitchen. Since there is no separate bar space on the fourth floor, he implanted the concept of a wine tasting lounge into the front hall. And he noticed that meetings often have a front desk organizing them at the door, and in this module, this Recption was officially solidified

.

▲  4F conference area plan

▲  From left to right: Open Kitchen, Breakout Hall, Wine Gallery, meeting room foyer

How to sell a banquet space with such innovative hardware? In Hong Kong Rosewood, another new module worthy of attention has emerged. Master Ji spent a lot of money to design a banquet experience and sales space: including consultation, two showrooms , a Testing Room, where you can choose from the overall layout of the banquet to the details of the menu, floral arrangements, tablecloths, especially the specially set-up Testing Room, where you can taste dishes on the spot and experience a noble, private and exclusive banquet. As for the promotion process, it can be said that Master Ji transformed the traditional explanatory wedding banquet sales into experiential sales through this module

.

▲  Banquet experience plan

▲  Banquet experience space

Therefore, the entire Hong Kong Rosewood banquet system is an innovative, complex and gorgeous system. Master Ji is still very good at concept innovation and design combined with operation and service. The specific operating results of the entire banquet space have yet to be observed and verified, but I dare to say , hold a banquet at Rosewood Hong Kong, the price will definitely be very beautiful.

Victoria Harbor × Guest Room

Finally, we came to the guest room area. Due to the layout of the entire tower, basically 5/6 of the rooms have sea views (the four rooms on the north side have Kowloon views), and there are four suites on each floor. The price logic is Grand Harbor Corner Suite>Deluxe Harbor Suite>Harbor Corner Suite>Kowloon Peak View Suite>Basic Room with Sea View>Basic Room with Kowloon View

.

▲ 22F Floor Plan

Rosewood Hong Kong basically contributes the basic room type with the highest configuration standards in Hong Kong. In addition to the much talked about Loro Piana navy blue wool wallpaper, Giorgetti bedding, etc. , there is also a double shower equipped in the basic room

.

▲Basic room plan

Master Ji does not pursue a bejeweled design when designing guest rooms, but designs with a specific purpose. He believes that Victoria Harbor is the most beautiful port in the world, and the rooms are designed to establish a connection with the guests. In addition to using his usual electric screens, Master Ji also designed openable wooden blinds and curtains (only available in suites). He hopes that guests can choose a variety of Turn Down forms. Under his imagination, guests can When checking in, you should turn off the lights and open the blinds or lower the curtains when looking at the Victoria Harbor view from the window to fully appreciate the night view. Use actions like this to build a memory. This was the experience he hoped for

.

▲ Interior view of basic room type

The bathroom is a typical fantasy model. The large white pattern that was only used in suites in the past has been moved to the basic room type, and the octagonal copper basin also continues the magnificent London style

.

▲ Basic room bathroom

The room type I stayed in at Rosewood Hong Kong was the West Kowloon Suite, and I fully appreciated the details of the suite. Basically, there were two sets of Mini Bars and two sets of wine rooms. When I checked in, there was a small half bottle of whiskey in the foreign wine bottle in the bedroom. Let people feel the details and standards of service

.

▲ Kowloon Peak View Suite Plan

▲  Grand Harbor Corner Suite living room

▲  Grand Harbor Corner Suite bedroom

▲  The wine tasting counter in the Grand Harbor Corner Suite

The standard suite is more like a combination of a large basic room and a living room, forming a so-called "double living room". Some of the upgrades are the bathroom system. The bathroom has a larger bathtub and a more ceremonial double-open wooden door

.

▲  Grand Harbor Corner Suite

▲  Grand Harbor Corner Suite living room

▲  Grand Harbor Corner Suite Double Room

▲  Grand Harbor Corner Suite bedroom

▲  Grand Harbor Corner Suite bathroom

In the guest room public area, another highlight is the Floor Lounge on each floor, which is equipped with sofas, books, newspapers and periodicals for resting, like a simplified version of the "Executive Lounge", and on the bookcases, there is an uninterrupted supply during the day. Snacks and water. If you are in a hurry to go out in the morning and don’t have time to have breakfast, you can just grab a piece of cake and go out. The concept of this Floor Lunge is that guests can receive friends or relax in the public area without entering the room

.

▲Floor Lounge on each floor of the guest room level

▲ Water and snacks provided every day in the Floor Lounge

Therefore, the entire magnificent guest room system in Hong Kong is based on Victoria Harbor View, through high-standard and gimmick hardware, a large number of details in the room, and an overall service system, realizing and supporting the most expensive housing price system in Hong Kong.

The Manor Club

The Manor Club is a price increase to the executive lounge model within the Rosewood system. The fee of 1,680++ includes 24-hour access for two people at any time, and free non-alcoholic drinks in the Mini Bar. You know, under the single-person executive lounge charging model such as the Ritz-Carlton, the executive treatment is only about 700. Hong Kong Rosewood’s Club treatment support is still quite specific.

In order to achieve this price, The Manor Club is equipped with a bar. In addition to traditional booths, it also adds configurations such as a pool table. Of course, there is also a 24-hour staff support system

.

▲  The Manor Club

▲Bar@  The Manor Club

▲The Play Room @  The Manor Club

At least during my stay, I observed that the flow of people in The Manor Club was still quite large, which also reflects the high spending power of Hong Kong's high-end business people. Whether the service is worth the price is a matter of opinion.

Elegance in the Image Age

Regarding the Chinese restaurant, it is run by Bar Studio, and I had the opportunity to talk about it with Beijing Rosewood.

As for the wellness section, since the currently open swimming pools and gyms are lackluster, I won’t go into details here. Let’s see if there will be any surprises after the SPA opens.

I have written so much here and there, but back to the title of the article, the image era refers to the Instagram era we are in now. Everyone can take beautiful photos with increasingly powerful mobile phone imaging systems. There are countless "Internet celebrity" B&Bs and space fragments will give people the illusion that the threshold for good design is getting lower and lower. These old-school design masters are becoming more conservative and outdated, and even a little out of place.

I admit that I have had this idea, and even before I checked in, I was full of doubts about the beauty of Hong Kong based on the photos on the official website. What the hell are those old-fashioned plaid curtains? ? ?

But when I stepped into the hotel lobby and began to experience every detail and all kinds of attentive services, I still felt that it was worth the room price. You get what you pay for. At the same time, I sighed: Master Ji is still Master Ji, the hotel’s on-site feeling is better than Photos are so powerful!

By the way, I was silently sweating for the newly opened St. Regis Hong Kong opposite. From the ambitious 4800+ HKD house price when it opened, to the recent reduction to 4500+ HKD and then to the more common 4K in the off-season. It can only be said that business travelers with normal aesthetics and service awareness will eventually vote with their feet to see whether they will pay for St. Regis's 24-hour butler service.

Master Ji once said in an interview: I don’t care what my hotel looks like on Instagram. I care more about the experience and feelings of each guest. I hope I can use my design to convey "Hospitality" to them. ” concepts and values.

I think the above sentence sums up the concept of Hong Kong Rosewood very well. In the age of images, there are still people who insist on creating an elegant lifestyle, and there are still people who are using good design to improve service standards and quality bit by bit. There are still people who care about your feelings and experiences.

There are still masters like Ji Yutang who are pushing forward the hotel industry. They are the indispensable moat for these high-end hotels.

Looking forward to Master Ji’s Kyoto Park Hyatt and Andaz 3.0, we will see you next season.
